A friend of Transition Monday suggested we take a look at a 1982 film called Koyaanisqatsi, which from the Hopi language means, “life out of balance; crazy life; life in turmoil; life disintegrating; a state of life that calls for another way of living…” The central idea behind the movie is that:
Humanity no longer exists in the natural world, we are no longer connected to it. It is not that we are now users of technology, but rather that we exist within technology, we are part of it and it is part of us. The natural world now exists only to support the artificial one in which we live.
Koyaanisquatsi was made in 1982, well before social media.
Now, we are even more part of technology, and it is even more part of us.
So our third idea for Mondays is to take a break from technology on Mondays and use this time to explore more balanced ways of living with our natural environments.
We have also been sent a related link to Russell Brand talking about a documentary called The Social Dilemma, which describes how many people are now addicted to social media and can’t stop even if they want to. There will be more detail in the forum discussion. We’d love to know what you think. Contact us or make a comment.
